One of my clients told me about this book: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Dr. Weissbluth. I really didn't think I'd want to read it because Sophia sleeps well at night, but it's great. It will tell you how much sleep a child needs depending on their age. It covers infancy to toddlers. It talks about keeping naps and bedtime sacred and cry-free.
The intro. will tell you to read this book when you are pregnant. It also tells you how to read it if your baby has already been born or if you are dealing with a toddler. I love that. Instead of reading from cover to cover, they give you an action plan of how to dissect the book in order to maximize the amount of information received in a minimal amount of time.
Some topics it covers:
Colic
Fussiness
Bottle fedding
Breast feeding
Co-sleeping
Naps
Sleeping through the night
Importance of sleep for the whole family
I think this would be a valuable read for anyone who interacts with children on a daily basis. After one night of reading, Sophia improved her sleeping at night, and I didn't even think she needed to.

PUSH

Vicki grabbed my feet, told me to take a cleansing breath, then she said it. "Deep breath in and push!" Before I knew it, I was pushing. It was so empowering. In an instant I was in a place no one else could be. My breath was strong, my legs were limber and my baby was coming. There is no way pushing can be described, so all I can say is that giving birth vaginally is the most amazing experience ever.
After three pushes, my doctor was in and shocked. He couldn't believe how quickly things progressed. I looked up to ask him how long he thought it would take, and his response was, "I don't like being hot." At that moment I realized he was all suited up with his "garb". After watching nine months of a baby story I knew this was minutes away. Breathing and pushing was my only memory. It was easier yet harder than I thought it would be. The only time I entered back into reality was when I felt IT! I could feel the snipping of scissors. The cutting had began, but more about that later. I caught my mother's eye and she was jumping out of her skin and shaking her head yes. Suddenly I knew I was nearing the end. She gave me that last push to push. Like a champ, I gave two more pushes and Sophia was born!
That moment...that moment is like none other. When they put my daughter on my chest my whole world changed. From the trauma of birth, infants are wide awake. Her yes locked on mine and I became a new woman. She was gorgeous. No real cries, just blue eyes, a tiny mouth, a button nose and lots of love. I was a mom. No more pushing or cutting, just me and my daughter.
Birth is a gift!

OK comfortably numb
From noon until 2 Jeff and I passed time by talking to our nurse, visiting with my sister, getting checked by my doctor and listening to music. Around ten minutes of two, my mom and Maria called from the waiting room to say they were getting lunch. I encouraged Jeff to go with them to get a bite to eat. Everyone kept telling me it would be a long wait, so I figured one of us should be well nourished. Off Jeff went to Au Bon Pain to get lunch. I sat quietly reading my book. I wasn't nervous, scared or anxious, until...
I felt a pounding down below that no one prepared me for. I rang for my nurse, but I had to wait for her. Waiting wasn't an option. I rang again as the pressure increased. i have to admit, now my concern level was increasing. Once Vicki, my nurse, came in everything happened so quickly it's actually hard to recall.
Vicki examined me and said, "This is it. You are ten centimeters." She wanted me to start pushing, but I had to get Jeff. I called his cell and told him to come quickly and to bring my mom. I hadn't said hello to her yet that day and I didn't want to go into labor without seeing her.
While I was waiting for them, Vicki ordered the tray for delivery, and started to prepare the room. My mom and jeff came running in with their food. I have to say, it did make me hungry. We said a prayer and before I knew it, Vicki said I should start pushing. It was at that very moment, and only that one moment, that I got freaked out.
I never, through the entire pregnancy or the morning of induction, felt scared or nervous. When she said, "Push!" I got really frightened. I couldn't conceive how I was going to push a human out of my body.
Yet, before I knew it, it was happening. I went within to a place where I didn't even know where I was, and I just pushed with a force I hoped I would have. The only thing I said to Vicki was, "Let's top off my epidural."

Pregnancy, Child Birth, Hospitals, OH MY!
In my last post, I was 9 months pregnant and preparing to be induced. Now our beautiful baby is 14 days old! It has been very long since I posted, but I promise I will be writing a lot. Today, I'd like to tell you about the day of my delivery.
Jeff and I woke up and were perfectly on time to the hospital on that cool Wednesday morning. I wasn't nervous in the slightest. We had everything packed, and my mom and my sister were on their way for moral support. Jeff was unbelievably cool and loving. Everything seemed simple enough.
Once admitted by my wonderful nurse, Vicki, my doctor strolled in with his coffee. In a matter of minutes in the hospital, my water was broken and we were on our way.
NOW, this is where y post gets interesting. From here on in, I plan to tell you exactly what the birthing experience was like. Because no one was truly honest with me, and they should have been. When he broke my water, I thought I was going to feel my brains drain out with my amniotic fluid. It was way intense. Jeff was silent for 20 minutes after that because he just had no words to describe what he had seen.
Things quieted down and the waiting began. I spoke to my sister and she recommended that I get the epidural ASAP. I waited longer than I should have, but I did order it around noon sometime. Thank goodness I didn't wait longer because I would have been delivering au natural. Jeff was allowed to stay in the room for the shot, but he was banned to a corner of the room. I must say, I was most worried about that needle in my back, but that proved to be the easiest part of everything. I did flinch once but not from pain. The sensation was just odd and eery. Once all was done, the numbing was wonderful.
I will have to leave you hanging for now. Sophia is rousing and it is time to nurse.

38 weeks and counting!
Yesterday I hit the 38 week point in my pregnancy. It was very exciting! Jeff and I continue to complete many items on the TO DO list, and with every CHECK OFF, I hope she is closer to coming. Last night we were talking about the long journey, and we are so excited to start a new type of journey very shortly.
If you have read my first post, you all may know that this pregnancy truly is a miracle. Through our three years of trying we knew we would get pregnant by God's blessing, but we always wanted to have two children, so we filed to adopt a daughter from China. We feel so blessed to have two daughters on the way.
Right now this is where the long journey has taken us. In 2010, somewhere between April and June, we will be matched with an infant girl to become our daughter. Everything is completed and waiting is our only job. God's deliver of her will be wonderful!
In the meantime, we are here in 2008. In two weeks time, or hopefully sooner, our first daughter will be born to us. No paperwork was filed for her, but the years of devout prayer and faith have brought us to this point. We soon shall meet Sophia in all her grace.
In these next two weeks, I'll keep you all updated on our progress. Pregnancy has been so beautiful. Feeling Sophia's slight fetal movements are the highlight of my days. Nurturing her and caring for her has been a priviledge. Listening to her heartbeat every week with Jeff is magical. But, now...now we are ready to do all that and so much more for her out of the womb. Say your prayers that her last 2 weeks are healthy and that her delivery is safe and smooth. In the meantime, I continue to swaddle her in the womb and continue to fold the blankets that will swaddle her in her crib.

Feeling Well and Planning Ahead
Today I took it easy, and it felt great. The more I relax, the more Sophia moves, and that is the best reward.
Business is starting to develop for Jeff and I. Jeff is finally confident enough to start hiring people for his advertising business. I am quite proud of him because I see he is secure in his ability to bring business and creativity together for himself. Hopefully this will help buy our next home.
As for myself, my educational consulting business is my main stream of income. It entails going out to school districts to train their teachers and staff in various teaching techniques. That is time I won't have next year. In response to questions about next year, I have decided to work one day a month. I will book districts on a first come first serve basis. At first, I felt guilty that I wasn't taking on more work, but Jeff made it clear that he didn't want me to work. That really comforted me because I want so much to be a stay at home mom. That brings me to my next stream of income.
In February, I created Little Baby Headquarters. It was so important to me that I contribute financially to our family without compromising my time with baby. The online store seemed like the best choice. It allows me to provide top-quality items to other pregnant moms, baby products to new families, and downloadable seminars for teachers, tutors and parents.
With the three hard years of trying behind us, I want to enjoy this miracle we waited so long to meet. Hopefully, Little Baby Headquarters will become my main stream of income, so time out at work won't be an issue once Sophia arrives.
I pride myself in being an educational expert, and feel the same about the store. I look high and low for organic/eco-friendly products, so parents can be proud of items they use on or with their children. I also look for products made in the USA. With the economy the way it is, we should focus on keeping our money at home in America.
I would love to hear from other work at home moms, and urge all readers to checkout the great products at Little Baby Headquarters.

Pregnant and Selling a House
As you may all know, I am 8 months pregnant, we are in the midst of an international adoption for a daughter, and we have listed our house with a realtor. I know it sounds crazy, but it is actually well thought out. Tomorrow, I plan to talk more about out pregnancy and adoption timing, but today I'll tell you about the real estate craziness NOW!
This morning we made a nice TO DO list that would help us prepare for Sunday's Open House. As Jeff was Vacuuming, I was emailing our realtors about tomorrow's details. Low and behold the phone rings. It was from a realtor who wanted to show our house to a couple from Brooklyn for the second time. THE SECOND TIME. I can't say no, but I did panic slightly. Instead of finishing the TO DO list, we assessed and readjusted.
Jeff and I are a great team, so we started going into instant house showing mode. With 4 minutes to spare, we left a beautifully, staged house. Jeff went off to the gym and I hid out with the two Beagles at my next store neighbors house. Now we live in a townhouse. We have Beagles. That equals some noise, so in order to keep Penny and Snoopy quiet, I had to raid my neighbors "treat" closet.
The couple stayed for 20 minutes. I am thinking very positive.
The beagles and I shot back home, and now I am waiting to see if they throw up.
You don't know how many treats you have to give a Beagle to keep him quiet!
Right now, I am resting on the couch. Rushing, cleaning and 2 dogs don't mix well with pregnancy, but I think all will be well.
Wish us luck. Open House tomorrow.

What's happening now?
As you know from my last post, today was a busy day. Now I am thinking that I may have done too much. I presented from 9-3 and went immediately to tutoring until 6. I was home by 7 and jumped right into cooking dinner. For dessert, I folded a huge load of laundry and as a real treat I then starting responding to work emails. Surprise, surprise, I then started to get cramps. What is going on?
I feel like such an alarmist, but I love this little one so much already that I don't want to do anything to jeopardize her health. Ug!
To call the doctor or not to call?
It's times like this that really make me appreciate pregnancy. There is a life growing inside me and I can't let anything happen to that precious life. I think I shall call the doctor.
BUT before I go, I must update you on Little Baby Headquarters. We have sold some diaper bags and have three left before we stock up again. Go check them out and enjoy the new discounts. With our busy lives, it's worth it to treat ourselves to a nice organized diaper bag.

Monday, business as usual
Today we had another doctor's appointment to check the babies movement. Everything went well...she was very cooperative. I am approaching my third trimester in a matter of days. To me that is so exciting, yet slightly sad. I do so love carrying, growing and enjoying my little bundle. Maybe it could be that if I am still pregnant than I don't have to think about or endure labor:) Either way all is going well.
Tomorrow is adoption day. I have to run tons of photocopies of every document I have along with their sealings (notarization, certification, and authentication stamps). Once that is complete we package it and send it to our agency for critical review. Once it passes critical review, it goes off to China with our second fee and our CCAA fee. In China it takes 30 days to log in our information. When we receive our log in date, the two year time line starts ticking. You see why I put a lot of energy into getting the paperwork complete. There's so much time when it's out of my hands. The time I could control, I made sure I managed time well.
Tomorrow, I also have to prepare and photocopy a workshop that I am due to present to a school in Asbury Park on Wednesday. Once that is complete, I have tutoring clients.
Why do I tell you all this. No matter what you are going through, someone else can understand it because they are just as busy in their own way. I try not to talk about all I have going on to my friends because in their own way they are probably as busy or busier than me. No matter if it is being pregnant, or leaping into adoption, or starting up your own business, or selling your house by yourself...no matter what... there's someone who understands and wants to hear your exciting news.
Thank you for listening to mine. Please feel free to share your busy news!

Getting Business Going
In the beginning, I promised to walk you through these past 2- 3 years. When we found out that parenthood would come later than we thought, we quickly put a plan in place to invest in ourselves, our future and our children's future. Here are more steps that got us there.
As our June 3rd due date nears, I am feeling more pressure to get things off the ground. This morning Jeff and I had to spend two unexpected hours dealing with issues and contracts for the real estate rental properties that we bought last year. As a couple, it was easier than to doing it on my own. If you feel the urge to leap into being an entrepreneur, it is comforting to do it along side a friend, family member or spouse. We know when we talk business that we must keep our eyes set on the long term goals: passing on wealth to our biological child (Sophia) and our adopted daughter (Mei Li). Without that goal in mind, I think it would have been tempting to throw in the towel a long time ago.
I mentioned a few days back that we read a lot and attended many seminars. After about 6 months to a year, we bought our first 2 investment properties. Nothing can totally prepare you for bad tenants or broken furnaces, but I must say, the time we took reading and learning from a coach prepared us for a lot. The houses cover themselves, but the cash flow is lower than we wanted. Therefore, our next step in real estate is to get these two properties performing financially before we invest in another.
Simultaneously, we are focusing a lot of energy into the eBay store Little Baby Headquarters. We completely realize how hard retail is, but we have a plan that will hopefully get us going faster than expected. First we chose a niche. The store provides services and products to assist families through pregnancy up through having a toddler the age of five. Second, we hope to stock our store with well-rated items for safety, ease of use and price. Now a days, it's expensive to buy unexpected items and we wish to build a store where people can come and find new, reasonably priced items that carry a respected name in the industry.
Yes, life is busy, but we hope to be up and running better before baby comes. I'd rather be frazzled now than later.
So many moms these days are double tasking, even before baby's arrival. How do you all do it?
If you have tips about preparing for a child while working, please feel free to share.

Let's jump to today for a moment
Today I am feeling much stress. I was hoping to order some new and exciting items for our eBay store, Little Baby Headquarters, but life happened. Yesterday, Jeff and I had to go to the doctors because I hadn't felt the baby move for over 24 hours. We just stopped everything and spent the entire business day in doctors' offices. Everything turned out fine, but I have come to learn that if you don't feel your baby move after 12 hours, it's time to call the doctor. We went to our OBGYN and I was put on the monitor. I couldn't feel her moving, but I could hear her heartbeat and that was a relief. The monitor picked up some movement and my doctor was satisfied. To be extra cautious, he sent me to Maternal-Fetal Medicine to get a Biophysical Profile via ultrasound. There they saw her movements, measured the amniotic fluid and checked her heart... 3 times. All went well and we finally had a sigh of relief. Sorry I haven't updated, but that has had me preoccupied.
The lesson I learned was to stop. I was constantly going. I wanted to find new wholesalers for the eBay store, I needed to prepare for my day job as an educational consultant, and laundry was building up. Sometimes, I wonder, if I pampered myself more, would she have more time and room to move. Today is a busy day, but not to busy to stop and let my baby do some dance moves. Mommies-to-be: Stop. Put your feet up. Take deep breathes and let your baby do her thing. Trust me.
I'll be back tomorrow. BE WELL!

How Did I Arrive Here?
Once we found out that having children was going to be a struggle, we started to realize that trying with faith and the adoption would both take some time and patience. Jeff and I decided to invest in our family very early. We spent the last part of 2006 and all of 2007 educating ourselves. On what? You ask.
We loved our families, and still are blessed with both sets of parents. Both Jeff and I had hard working successful dads, but we remember them traveling and coming home late for dinner. We know that was difficult for them. Also, we know that our moms had to play both parenting roles sometimes. We knew there had to be a better way. My father was a great entrepreneur and I remember him always telling me..."Work for yourself." So we started to educate ourselves. We read all about investing in real estate, then we dove into start up businesses and along the way, we try to aquire tips for smart investing. Our end goal, when God blesses us with the special little ones, we're ready to parent as a team and not as overworked zombies. It's been hard, scary and bonding.
Tomorrow, I will discuss what action steps we took to get our new life started, in the meantime...
go read something to invest in your family's future:)

Welcome to Day #1: How I Got Here
Thank you for sharing with me our journey of pregnancy and adoption.
My blog will discuss our three year struggle to get pregnant. I will explain how I arrived at this point (This point is called 6 months pregnant and mid-way through an international adoption).
Interestingly, I will walk backwards to explain struggles, lessons and procedures while I progress forward to my due date, June 3rd. During this time I will continue to update you on our adoption from China.
Most importantly, I will inform you of all the products, questions and life lessons my husband and I have encountered during this pregnancy and adoption. My goal is to personally review specific baby products while including pointers and ratings from consumer reports. Many of the products mentioned will be available to buy through our newly created eBay store: Little Baby Headquarters.
Let's begin, shall we.
Today, my husband, Jeff, and I went to the doctors to hear our daughter's heart beat. She is growing so strong.
Funny to think...
A year ago, I was told by my former GYN that I should consider a life without children. A year prior to that, a highly regarded fertility specialist in NYC also indicated the same barren idea. We had decided long ago that infertility treatments weren't for us. Jeff and I never gave up, and we turned to the only source that supplies guarantees: GOD. On August 7, 2007, Jeff and I took a lunge of faith. We began paper work with CCAI in Colorado to adopt a daughter from China. In Addition, with deep faith and unending prayer by many, we experienced our first positive pregnancy test on Sept. 25, 2007. I truly believe God heard and answered our prayers to be parents. In a month's time, He made us parents to two beautiful, unborn children.
For now, I'll leave you with that information to digest. Tomorrow, I will discuss the parenting philosophy that Jeff and I share and how that lead us toward working together and starting a Baby eBay store: Little Baby Headquarters. Also, I'll review the beginning stages of the adoption and the pregnancy.
Be Well.
